Hundreds of villagers in Indonesia fled their homes early Friday when a volcano erupted Friday as the mountain in northern Sumatra belched smoke, ash and other material.

“Constant tremors were felt since yesterday and, between 4:38 and 4:51 a.m. this morning, the volcano erupted, shooting thick, hot ash 3,000 meters (1.9 miles) to the sky,” said Surono, the head of the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation, in an interview with CNN. “This is the biggest one, compared to the last two.” Like many Indonesians, Surono has one name.

Mount Sinabung erupted last week for the first time since 1600 prompting thousands of villages to seek safety in emergency shelters, mosques and churches
