A politician from the United Development Party (PPP) was tried at the Corruption Court in Jakarta on Thursday on charges of receiving bribes linked to the election of Miranda S. Goeltom as Bank Indonesia (BI) senior deputy governor during his tenure as a member of the House of Representatives in 2004.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors alleged Endin to have accepted 30 checks worth Rp 50 million each (US$5,500) from Arie Malangjudo aka Ahmad Hakim Safari.
Arie was allegedly ordered by Nunun Nurbaeti, the wife of former National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. (ret.) Adang Daradjatun who is now a lawmaker for the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), to hand out the money.
Throughout June and July 2004, Endin allegedly distributed the checks to his colleagues on the House Commission IX on banking.
The court plans to summon lawmakers Panda Nababan and Nunun, who reportedly served as Miranda’s “cashier”, in the Rp 24 billion (US$2.6 million) bribery trial of lawmakers who allegedly accepted bribes in the election. The court will also summon Miranda as a witness.
